Letter From Debbie

We receive countless letters from women who want to surprise their husbands with a new kitchen, den, bedroom and so on, but reading between the lines I have the sneaking suspicion that it's really the women who are looking forward to the makeover. This was definitely the case with Marilyn.

She wrote to us several times about how desperate her husband was to redo their den.

We decided to take a look and brought a small camera along for the purpose of recording her views about the space. It was immediately clear that Marilyn really hated her outdated den and her husband was not in the picture in the least.

I told her we have many shows that are similar to her home, (not true), and we wouldn't be doing hers, (also not true). Sometimes you must be cruel to be kind.

We had every intention of transforming this 80's space with all its traditional trappings into a stunning family room. It was worth the long hard days and nights as we painted the cathedral ceiling, restyled a towering brick wall, laid a stunning plank floor and so much more.

When she returned with her husband, who knew nothing, the shock was not only visible on Marilyn's face but also on mine. You have to watch this exciting episode of Facelift to see her very physical reaction. I will be visiting a chiropractor for many weeks!

Letter From Marilyn

Dear Debbie,

I am slowly coming down to earth after the incredible surprise you all pulled on me and my husband, but it's a long trip back! What an emotion-packed trip I had. The shock of the surprise was overwhelming. To see my now gorgeous living room was a real thrill. You guys did an amazing job pulling it all together. I have to say I also, so far, have this feeling that my kids can do no wrong.

For a whole month, they schemed and planned this together with you, and never even cracked the tiniest hint. Boy, am I that easy to trick? It still boggles my mind to realise how much of their time and energy went into the planning and execution of this unbelievable remodelling feat.

I do have to say that I do feel a little bit cheated. My three kids could not stop talking about your amazing group of people working day and night in our home. It apparently was a real treat to spend the four days with them, and I would have loved to be part of that adventure. Even my neighbours commented on what a wonderful bunch you all are. So there really aren't enough words to express my gratitude and compliments to your whole team for a simply fabulous adventure, and a beautiful change to our home.
